Fascinating Vintage Photos of Saskatchewan, Canada From the Early-20th Century

Saskatchewan a prairie and boreal province in western Canada, it became a full member of the Canadian federation in 1905. It is the only landlocked province of Canada with large distances to moderating bodies of waters. In the early 20th century, there were 19,200 families residing in Saskatchewan, the population increased rapidly in the 1910s.

The Liberals won the 1905 provincial elections and they started many social and development projects in the province. The Saskatchewan government bought out Bell Telephone Company in 1909. The government also provided bond guarantees to railway companies for the construction of branch lines. The large influx of immigrants from Europe and America arrived in Saskatchewan in 1910. Saskatchewan gave women the right to vote in 1916 and at the end of 1916 passed a referendum to prohibit the sale of alcohol.

Here below are some stunning historical photos that show what Saskatchewan looked like in the early 20th century from 1900s to 1930s.

  1. Hard to say exactly what this was taken from as the Hotel Sask wasn’t yet built in the ‘Teens, (opened officially in 1928). The view would be pretty close to one from the 8th floor looking south. The odd building in the lower right was demolished IIRC about 10-15 years ago. I forget its exact name and purpose but it was notable (my fallible memory). The 2+ story building in the mid right is one of 4 buildings currently still extant on the 2100 block of Cornwall/Scarth streets. IIRC the addresses are 2014 14th, 2101, 2167 and 2171 Cornwall. It seems all 4 survived the 1912 Tornado.

  1. Correctly depicts Scarth street of the 1700 block looking south. The King’s Hotel is the large, darker building on the right. About this time, it was quite swanky. It’s hard to tell if it was during or after Prohibition. SK had prohibition from 1916 to somewhere in 1924.

  1. The book “Prairie Echoes of Hatton” states that Ed Sept opened his own store in Hatton in 1922 after the Auger store he was working at burned down in 1921. The book says that the new store burned down 2 years later (i.e. 1924).

  2. If the child if their first, Evelyn, then this is Hatton probably in 1922. If this is an later child then this might be Golden Prairie where Ed Sept opened a store in 1927.

    • The building you’re asking about is the old City Hall that preceded the one used for that purpose circa 1966 (sometimes called the Old Post Office at 11th and Scarth, which is now the Globe Theatre). In this picture, City Hall (between Hamilton and Rose on 11th) was demolished to make way for Mid Town Center.
