Denver was founded in November 1858 after the discovery of gold, which dried up quickly, and the city moved to become a supply hub for new mines in the mountains. The city was devastated by fire in 1863, and a year later a flash flood swept away many buildings, including the city hall. Investors from Denver organized their own railway which was completed in 1870. New roads and improvements to rail and air travel in the early twentieth century made Denver a hub for transportation. In 1893, financial panic swept the nation, silver markets crashed, Banks failed, smelters shut down, and silver kings became paupers.
In the early 20th century, Denver was thriving and growing rapidly. Several development projects added new landmarks, updated existing facilities, and improved the city’s landscape including the City Auditorium, the Civic Center and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
