Renée Perle was a Romanian-Jewish fashion model who left her home country and moved to Paris in pursuit of a life shaped by style and ambition. She met French photographer Jacques-Henri Lartigue in 1929, and from that moment, the two became inseparable. She moved in with him as his girlfriend, and she quickly became the central subject of some of the most celebrated photographic work of the era.
What made Perle so compelling in front of the camera was a combination of physical presence and personal ease. Her finger-waved hair, precisely painted cupid’s bow lips, long neck, and natural confidence gave Lartigue exactly the kind of subject his lens demanded. Perle was not only a model — she also painted. Several of Lartigue’s photographs capture her self-portraits in the background, small glimpses into her own creative world. Her paintings showed a repeated fixation on her own face, rendered again and again with an intensity that overshadowed any concern for technical skill. Those works, however, are nearly impossible to track down today. The Lartigue Foundation has searched for them without success.
After Perle’s death, she had held onto a collection of 340 photographs documenting her relationship with Lartigue for nearly 50 years. Her descendants eventually auctioned them off quietly. Everything else she had carefully preserved — her paintings and personal belongings — was dispersed in two major Paris sales held by auction house Tajan in 2000 and 2001. Her stepdaughter kept one oil portrait of her, but the rest scattered.
The 340 photographs that survived tell a vivid story of a couple deeply involved in each other’s lives. Perle appears charming and reflective throughout — sometimes lounging, sometimes gazing into the distance, always fully aware of the man behind the camera. The auction did not include any journals or diaries, so her inner voice never made it into the historical record.
Lartigue documented their romance thoroughly, but the story as the world knows it is his story, told through his camera. Perle never wrote a memoir or gave interviews that survived. Everything the public knows about her comes filtered through his photographs and his private writings. She stares back at viewers across nearly a century of time — expressive, magnetic, and permanently beyond reach.

Fashion editors and designers have returned to these images repeatedly, drawing on her instinctive sense of dress and the ease with which she carried herself.
