The year 1976 is remembered for its massive heatwave and huge drought in London. The summer’s Notting Hill Carnival was not a success, as 100 police officers and 60 carnival-goers were injured during riots.

This year also witnessed the emergence of punk. In September 1976, the 100 Club played host to the first punk festival, helping push the movement from the underground into the mainstream; in December, the Sex Pistols’ profanity strewn appearance on Bill Grundy’s TV show brought the band public notoriety.
