The Belgian Revolution broke out in August 1830, when Belgium rebelled against Dutch rule and declared independence, which Europe approved at the London Conference of 1830–1831. The Belgian National Congress was formed to draw up a constitution. The first Liberal government came to power in 1847. These stunning colorized photographs show streets, towns, cities, monuments, landmarks, ports, and everyday life of Belgium in the late 19th century.
