Wales has more than 600 castles, it has more ancient fortresses per square mile anywhere else in the world. Most of these old architectures date back to the reign of King Edward I. Some have been lived in continuously for a thousand years, while others are romantic ruins. Many are native Welsh castles, built by Welsh royal dynasties, often in very beautiful places.
Here below are some spectacular photochroms from the late-19th century that show some famous castles of Wales. This technique was invented in the 1880s by a Swiss printer, the Photochrom process began with coating a tablet of lithographic limestone with a light-sensitive emulsion and exposing it to sunlight under a photo negative for several hours. Like postcards, the photochroms feature subjects that appeal to travelers, including landscapes, architecture, street scenes, and daily life and culture.
