Stunning Vintage Photos Show Vienna in 1953

Austria regained its political independence and sovereignty with the “Austrian State Treaty” on May 15, 1955. The Austrian Parliament amended the treaty right away so Austria would remain neutral and non-aligned.  Since Austria temporarily ceased to exist in 1938, this treaty was referred to as a state treaty.

During the 1950s, rapid development started in Vienna. New U-Bahn lines improved public transportation in Vienna. After Lower Austria was reintegrated into Greater Vienna, the population of the city dropped. The economy was largely dependent on commerce and industries.

Below are some fascinating vintage photos that capture Vienna’s street scenes, landmarks, and everyday life in 1953.
