Florida is the fourth most populous state in the United States. Located on the northwest side of the state, it borders Alabama and Georgia on the northeast side. Florida’s economy was historically based on agricultural products such as cattle farming, sugarcane, citrus, tomatoes, and strawberries. In the 1920s, economic prosperity stimulated tourism to Florida and the development of hotels and resort communities. Florida is also known for its amusement parks, orange crops, the Kennedy Space Center, and retirement destinations.
These fascinating photos will take you back to the 1990s in Florida. During the 1990s, Florida was struck by one of the worst hurricanes. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew hit Homestead, just south of Miami, as a Category 5 hurricane, killing 40 people, destroying 100,000 homes, leaving over a million without electricity, and causing $20–30 billion damage. South Florida’s sensitive vegetation suffered severe damages. This was the region’s first significant storm in decades. Aside from heavy property damage, the hurricane nearly destroyed the region’s insurance industry.
