Stunning Vintage Photos Show What Athens Looked Like in the 1970s

In the 1970s, the population of Athens was over 2.5 million. The financial, industrial, and social life of Athens was changing, a number of trends in regard to fashion, music, and entertainment were imported from abroad. The city was so much polluted that according to the then Greek Minister of Culture, Constantine Trypanis, “The carved details on the five the caryatids of the Erechtheum had seriously degenerated, while the face of the horseman on the Parthenon’s west side was all but obliterated”. A series of measures taken in the 1990s to improve air quality.
