Long before punk rock had a polished look and a mainstream audience, it was raw, loud, and lived on the streets and beaches of California. During the 1970s and 1980s, a generation of young Californians built their own world out of skateboards, loud music, and a hard rejection of everything mainstream. These photographs pull you directly into that world.
The man behind the camera was Glen E. Lockett, better known as Spot — a sound engineer and producer who became one of the most important figures in the early American hardcore punk scene. He worked closely with bands like Black Flag, the Minutemen, and Hüsker Dü, shaping the sound of an entire movement from behind the mixing board. But before all of that, he picked up a camera.
“I started taking photos in 1969,” Spot said in an interview. His first camera was stolen in 1972, and he didn’t get another one until 1976, when he was living in Hermosa Beach and writing for the Easy Reader newspaper. That’s when his photography shifted into something more deliberate. “Then it became photo-journalism,” he explained.
Hermosa Beach, along with neighboring Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach, sat at the center of Southern California’s South Bay scene. The area was a breeding ground for both surf and skate culture. Empty pools, concrete drainage ditches, and parking lots became skate spots. The same restless energy that drove kids onto their boards drove them into sweaty clubs and garages to play music.
California’s beaches were already famous for surfing, but by the mid-1970s, skateboarding had carved out its own identity. Skaters borrowed tricks and style from surfers but took them onto asphalt and concrete. The gear was simple — a board, some wheels, and whatever protective gear you could scrape together, which was often nothing at all.
Punk rock arrived in California and immediately fused with that street-level skate culture. The two scenes shared the same disregard for rules and the same do-it-yourself attitude. Kids who skated during the day showed up to punk shows at night. The music was fast, the shows were chaotic, and nobody asked for permission to do any of it.
Spot documented this overlap up close. He wasn’t an outsider pointing a lens at something exotic — he was a working part of the scene. His position as a producer gave him access that most photographers never got. He was in the rehearsal spaces, at the shows, and on the streets with the same people he was recording in the studio.
The look of California punk was distinct from its British counterpart. There were fewer safety pins and more surf-worn clothes. Shaved heads, band T-shirts, and cutoff shorts mixed with the bleached-out style of beach towns. The fashion wasn’t constructed — it grew out of the climate and the poverty of young people living cheap along the Southern California coast.
Venues were small and often unlicensed. Church halls, warehouses, and backyard spaces hosted shows that drew dozens or hundreds of fans packed in tight. Stage diving and moshing were standard. Police shutdowns were common. For many young Californians, these shows were the center of their social lives.
Spot’s photography window closed in 1981 when Media Art, the facility where he had his darkroom, shut down. “I lost my darkroom in 1981 when Media Art closed down,” he said. “But all that damn musical punkin’, rockin’, and sockin’ had happened, and I didn’t have time or facilities for photography anymore.” By then, he was deep into producing records, and the camera work stopped.
What he left behind is a record of a very specific time and place. The years between 1976 and 1981 saw California’s punk and skate scenes grow from small local subcultures into something that spread across the country. Spot was there with a camera during those exact years, shooting what he saw without staging or glamorizing any of it.
The photos show young people in motion — skating hard, playing loud, and filling up every spare moment with something physical and unscripted. These weren’t posed portraits. They were caught moments, taken by someone who understood the culture from the inside.
