Gloria Estefan is a singer, songwriter, and actress, who got worldwide fame with her superhit songs such as ‘Conga’ and ‘Rhythm’. She has won three Grammy Awards and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contributions to American music in her career. Estefan began her music career as a lead singer in the group Miami Latin Boys. The band was renamed Miami Sound Machine and it produced several hits in the 1980s and 1990s.
Early Life and Career
Gloria Stefan learned poetry in her childhood and she also took guitar lessons. In 1975, she met keyboardist Emilio Estefan and they two formed a band called the Miami Latin Boys. The band recorded its first album for a local label. Emilio and Gloria’s professional relationship turned into a romantic relationship and they got married in September 1978. The band rose to fame in the 1980s when the group signed a contract with famous records. The Miami Sound Machine initially succeed in the Spanish-speaking countries, because they first record four Spanish-language albums.
The Success of Miami Sound Machine
The group toured Europe and many other countries including Venezuela, Peru, Panama, and Honduras. The band recorded their first English album ‘Eyes of Innocence’ in 1984. The album’s single “Dr. Beat “went to the top of the European dance charts. The rousing dance number ‘Conga’ became a worldwide hit and reached #10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Following the success of ‘Eyes of Innocence’, the band released another hit album ‘Primitive Love’ in 1985. The album contained a string of hit singles such as ‘Bad Boys’ and Words Get in the Way’ which made their way onto Billboard’s top ten pop chart. Gloria Estefan became the star attraction and the commentators on the popular music scene called Estefan a demure, Hispanic version of Madonna.
Gloria’s accident and miraculous recovery
Gloria Estefan was badly injured in a band’s bus accident with her son on March 20, 1990. She suffered a broken vertebra in her back. Steel Rods were implanted to buttress the fracture. Estefan made a miraculous comeback after four years with her intense determination and family support. After the recovery, she released four albums and embarked on a world tour.
