Bristol was heavily bombarded during World War II; the city center suffered severe damage. After the war Bristol developed rapidly, many new housing schemes were launched to accommodate the growing population. Postwar reconstruction included the Council House, other modern public structures, and a new Broadmead shopping center. The Robinson Building was erected in 1966. The first supersonic airliner, the Concorde, was built in the late-1960s.
