San Francisco was in the midst of the war effort following the Great Depression and during the 1940s. As the city built itself up, the docks provided jobs for men, and the factories employed women. Without the pleasures of television or coffee shops, people shared hard times, but they had some memorable times in this vibrant city.

LIFE Photographer Meith Hagle visited San Francisco in 1943 and photographed everyday Life in the midst of World War II.
