Incredible Photos Reveal Poor Housing Conditions And The Lives Of Salford’s Slums From 1969-72

These powerful photos document the poor housing conditions and the lives of people living in the slum areas of Salford city from the late-1960s and 1970s. These photos depict the lives of families living in cold, damp, and often dangerous conditions. Housing Charity Shelter commissioned photographer Nick Hedges spent three years visiting areas of deprivation throughout Britain.

Housing Charity Shelter commissioned the work in an effort to raise consciousness about the extent of unfit living conditions and to illustrate, in human terms, what the real cost of bad housing was. These photographs compelled Britain’s politicians to take action in the 1970s.

There are photos of other cities in the project – check out: Manchester, New Castle upon Tyne, Birmingham, Glasgow, and Bradford.
