Far fewer know about Mario Segale — the real man whose name ended up on one of the most recognized fictional characters in history. His connection to Nintendo was not the result of a deal, a design choice, or even a planned tribute. It happened because of an unpaid rent dispute in a warehouse in Tukwila, Washington.
Mario Segale was born on April 30, 1934, in Seattle, Washington. His parents, Louis and Rina Segale, were first-generation Italian immigrants who worked as farmers. He was their only child. Growing up in a working-class household shaped his outlook early. After finishing high school, Segale skipped college entirely and went straight to work, starting his own construction business with nothing more than a single truck. That decision set the course for the rest of his life.
In 1957, at age 23, Segale married his girlfriend Donna. She joined him in the construction business, and together they built it into something far larger than a one-truck operation. Over the following decades, the company grew steadily. By 1998, it had become substantial enough that Segale sold it to an Irish corporation for $60 million. After that sale, he turned his full attention to real estate, running a company called Segale Properties alongside his wife and son.
The moment that tied Segale’s name to gaming history came in 1981. Nintendo was in the middle of developing a new arcade game — the one that would become Donkey Kong — inside a warehouse they were renting from Segale in Tukwila, Washington. The game’s main character at the time had a placeholder name: Jumpman. Then Segale showed up at the warehouse.
According to a report by the New York Times, Segale visited the warehouse to confront Nintendo’s company president over rent that had not been paid. The argument that followed left an impression on the Nintendo team. Somewhere in the middle of that tense exchange, talk turned to naming the game’s protagonist. The team decided to drop “Jumpman” and name the character Mario — a direct nod to their landlord who had just come to collect what he was owed.
Mario the character quickly outgrew his origins. What began as a side role in Donkey Kong became the centerpiece of Nintendo’s entire identity.
