Rare Historical Photos of American Homes from the early 20th Century

The standard American new home of 1900 had 700 to 1,200 square feet of space, with two or three bedrooms and one or (just about as likely) no bathrooms. It was probably a two-story house.

At the turn of the 20th Century, more than 20 percent of U.S. residents lived in crowded apartments, with entire families usually sharing one or two rooms. Most homes were tiny, rural farmhouses with few basic amenities, including plumbing and central heating.
