lever brothers actually own the property at the waterfront. All except the gas company Esso i think and lever brothers had leases . That is why all business at lake front vanished. The city wanted the waterfront for the rich. Not for the worker.

we as 50s kids always joked about the only fish in the Don River were Brown Trout. (Turds )
they coulds actually own the land. The rest of the lakefront belonged to the harbour commission. You could only lease the property from them.
The soap works were there because of the dead horse rendering plants were there to supply the tallow for the old style soap💥The rendering plants were there because it was easy to ship the solid crackling out via lake boats‼️There were literally many hundreds if not thousands of horses clomping around Toronto both private for transportation and for milk, bread and other deliveries. These horses had finite lifetimes and needed to be usefully disposed of.😱
Similarly, Chicago was the third-largest (after Los Angeles and NYC) radio production centre in the USA, and the original home of the radio soap operas, because the major soap companies were there, and got their tallow supplies from the Chicago stockyards.

I also used to live on River St at Queen, it got pretty smelly down there.
I lived the end of Amelia St ,across from Necropolis Cemetery we overlooked the Don Valley Ravine,30’s,40’s,50’s the north end of the Don,further up was clean especially the 30’s,my brothers swam there and there was fishing.
so they could dump the toxic waste directly into the river/lake inside of going through the sewers

i believe it had something to do with the run off from the plant, I remember driving down the parkway and seeing soap suds in the river.

I was a product manager at this Colgate factory (on Colgate Avenue) in the 1970s.
I was at McKim in the 70s. I think Colgate was gone by then and we had acquired P&G, Worked on Colgate at NCK in the late 70s, Arctic Power, Ajax cleaner and others. As creative director I had a had time with that account. The client had what we called, “a soap powder mentality”.
I lived just up the street on Bain Ave. Years later I was in that building many times presenting ad campaigns for the ad agency I worked for.
I used to work for Grafton Fraser at Broadview and Eastern and I believe Lever Brothers head office was in the same building as us. Of course my memory is not as sharp as it used to be so I could be wrong!!
I used to work at Lever when Grafton was there. We used to go to the cafeteria there.
