The CNE grounds played an important role in WW II. My dad was demobilized from the Army there in 1947.
Looks like the Manufacturers’ Building to the right. That area of the lake saw two members of the Canadian Engineers killed September 12, 1916, when they were trying to lay sea mines in the lake, so their unit could film minesweeping in action. This had been a feature of the CNE that year. QMS Griffiths and Sapper Edwards were in a rowboat with five mines, but against orders also had batteries. The two made contact. The rowboat and Edwards were blown to pieces. Griffiths’s body was recovered, but terribly mutilated.
Was it called Cherry Beach at any time?
Cherry beach is much further east form there
Wow looks like a desert shoreline.
The Grandstand at top right was the second on the site, the original was destroyed by fire in 1906. In 1947 this structure also burned down, the third and final Grandstand was built in 1948 and stayed until its demolition in 1999. The 1948 Grandstand was erected for $3 million CDN, probably considered an astronomical sum at the time…🤔🤯💸
