Thought it was on Yonge – Highway 11 – in Langstaff.
My mother used to point it out.
They should have one now instead if building on farm land. Maybe some would find they like farming?
The Jail Farm ran from Yonge St all the way to Bayview on the north side of Hwy 7. It was a sizeable property.
That was the idea, that rather than punish offenders of minor offences, including vagrancy, in prisons the offenders had an opportunity to give back to their community by farming and learn valuable skills in the process. It probably helped a lot of people
Similar architecture to Indian Residential Schools. Other similarities too.
Now it’s a row of stores òn the south side of high tech and a sub burb of homes to the north.
My Uncle Henry Wideman worked there.
My sister actually lives in the Proctor’s Home that was on the site. …. it was moved to a side street in Richmond Hill and refurbished … quite beautiful.
