Everyone around them were poor also, the children didn’t know any difference they were loved and have their family. I was told that by someone who lived in Cabbagetown, they said they always had food, and received new outfit at Easter and everyone around them lived the same and they were happy and loved.
Back then anyone who lived there were in the same boat. The kids probably had a great time as we didn’t live there but somewhere else and with just my mother working and my grandmother looking after us we had a great childhood. We never thought we were poor.
This is the perfect example of,what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,grew up with very little,but didn’t know it because so did all our friends.
Poverty was and is a shame in this country. Most of us have more than we need.
Back then I’m sure things were very difficult No birth control available so families were very large and very poor.
Let’s pay our share of taxes and hopefully provide equal opportunities and education for all Canadians.
