Self-portraiture has been a form of art for a long time. However, with the advent of phone cameras, people began using the term “selfie” as if it was a novel concept, despite it simply being a shortened version of “self-portrait.
I used to think peoplereferring to masturbation when they spoke of “taking a selfie,” and I felt too apprehensive to inquire about its meaning in the workplace.
The term ‘selfie’ has become a ubiquitous abbreviation for ‘self-portrait’ over time.
Although not all self-portraits are selfies, all selfies are indeed a form of self-portraiture that involves taking a photo of oneself while holding the camera in one’s hand(s).
Does anyone know the origin story of the term “selfie”? While it may seem like an obvious name, I am curious if anyone has been officially credited with coining the term.
It originated in Australia in 2002, when a man named Nathan Hope posted a self-portrait on an online forum after a drunken fall. He used the phrase “sorry about the focus, it was a selfie” to describe the picture. The word “selfie” is a combination of “self” and the informal Australian suffix “-ie”, creating a casual, endearing term for self-portraits.
The post features some captivating images, from modern-looking selfies like Ronald Reagan and the Jeff Bridges/Sam Eliot Pic, to more traditional self-portraits or studies like Michael Jackson and Julia Christiansen Hoffman, to snapshots of history such as Neil Armstrong, Allen Ginsberg, and The Beatles.
