I like tell my kids when I’m carrying my Nikon, “let me take a selfie of you.”
Is this where we’re at? People not understanding that selfie is a contraction of self-portrait? Fuck my old boots.
Are we really at a point where people don’t realize that selfie is short for self-portrait? It’s quite frustrating.
By selfie they mean a picture of the someone taking a picture of themselves. We don’t have to be rude and pedantic pretending a self portrait painting is the same thing as a “selfie”. VSauce has a great video on how we use the word “selfie” but it’s 2023, nobody not being pedantic would say a Van Gough self portrait is a selfie. OP meant a photographer taking a picture of themselves by themselves.
The act of capturing one’s own image can also be referred to as a self-portrait.
Can you show me where I denied that? Did I mention that self-portraits are limited to paintings? What I’m trying to convey is that a self-portrait painting is not the same as a selfie, but a selfie can be considered a form of self-portraiture. It’s similar to how a square is a type of rectangle, but not all rectangles are squares. I hope this clarifies the confusion, or if you have any feedback, please let me know.
You said “By selfie they mean a picture of the someone taking a picture of themselves.” Like… painting one?and “We don’t have to be rude and pedantic pretending a self portrait painting is the same thing as a “selfie Rude? How?
By acting as if they are unaware of the distinction between a painting and a photograph, and deliberately ignoring the concept of a selfie, they are displaying intentional rudeness and being deliberately difficult. It is clear that a painting is not equivalent to a photograph.
I know that a painting is not a photograph. You found conflicting information while researching ‘selfie,’ and there isn’t an authoritative definition. Everyone’s threshold for rudeness differs.
I believe they were referencing some other threads where arguments have broken out over the definition of ‘selfie’.
Mark Jefferson: “I believe Max has taken what you kids call a “selfie”… A dumb word for a wonderful photographic tradition.”
