I remember going to that park to see the alligators and even better at Christmas to see all the beautiful scenes! My sister getting lost evening but found!!!
I would much rather see it that way than the way it is today. I was born in the wrong era.
Are you sure this incredible photo wasn’t taken in the 1890 or 80s?
The camera faces N from today’s Mills & Oregon St. By 1900 there was significant construction (including El Paso’s first natatorium!) on the far side of the Plaza. I would date this photo to the early 1880s.
I just saw a photo taken in 1909 and El Paso was booming. The trees in the park were grown. No way the original building in the background was still there.
This photo is more likely from the 1880s. 😊
Total agreement. This picture is much earlier than 1895.
Photo is from 1895
how do you know that?
I live here in El Paso, TX and well familiar with old photos and its history.
Do you have documentation? I think it’s a little earlier, probably 1882-ish.
Sanborn Fire maps show the building with the arches in 1888, however gone by (or before) 1893 (see https://maps.lib.utexas.edu/maps/sanborn/e.html). There’s an 1885 Sanborn that shows the buildings pictured, but with an additional structure between them – dating the photo to the early 1880s.
