That was real poverty. No welfare, no free health care, etc.
My other-in-law grew up in a house just like that on Ontario street… there were 11girls … 2 bedrooms… they slept 5 to a bed…. And would walk up and down the train track to pick up coal to heat the house! No joke!
when people came from other countries with a large family the first thing they did was find a house to rent but it was very hard to find a decent house because they couldn’t afford . they would share a big house with 5 families with 1 washroom and one kitchen to share among them until they find work and later on, buy a house it might taks 3 to 4 years
