I lived near there from 56-67… Gerrard St E between Carlaw & Gerrard. Heavy industrial area mixed with residential area, the air pollution was deadly.
Beautiful picture and history
I loved the billboards!
The streets still look the same. The bullshit power lines. We could have had wireless electricity.
That was the first phase of the palmolive plant down at Carlaw and what was then known as Natalie Street, now Colgate Avenue – built in 1917 with the partial third floor added in 1918. That plant was extended in 1923 with the completion of the 3rd floor and an additional 3 floors for a 6 storey and basement structure. Further additions were made in 1936, 1938, 1944 and finally in 1953-54 finalizing the the 365,000 sq. ft. plant and corporate office until it was closed at the end of 1992 and demolished in 1994-95. The structure still had a lot of life in it when it was demolished as the site was then converted to houses on the west portion and a condo building was built in 2011-2013 on the site of the factory building.
