On July 28, 1973, roughly 600,000 people descended on Watkins Glen Grand Prix Raceway in upstate New York. The event, known as Summer Jam, earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest audience ever at a pop festival. At that moment, one out of every 350 people living in the United States was standing in that single field.
Organizers had sold just 150,000 tickets at ten dollars each. Hundreds of thousands of ticketless fans showed up anyway. The roads into Watkins Glen locked up in one of the largest traffic jams in American history, forcing thousands to abandon their cars on state highways and walk the remaining miles on foot.
The small town of Watkins Glen was completely overwhelmed. Fans spread into surrounding fields, setting up makeshift campsites and sleeping in the open air. The sheer number of gate-crashers turned the event into a free festival for the vast majority of those who attended.
Three acts took the stage for extended sets: the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band, and The Band. The music stretched across many hours under a blazing summer sun.
The crowd was four times larger than the official ticket limit. Local authorities made 50 arrests over the weekend. On the surrounding roads, four people died in traffic-related incidents. One child was born at the raceway during the gathering.
Rick Danko of The Band later named Watkins Glen one of the three most important festivals in his group’s history. When the final notes played and the crowd dispersed, the site was buried in debris — a lasting mark left by the largest festival audience America had ever seen.
