Fans in Ecstasy: The 1973 Summer Jam at Watkins Glen in Photos

On July 28, 1973, roughly 600,000 people converged on the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Raceway in New York. This event, known as Summer Jam, earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest audience at a pop festival. At the time, this massive crowd represented one out of every 350 people living in the United States. Organizers originally sold only 150,000 tickets for ten dollars each. However, hundreds of thousands of ticketless fans arrived anyway, which completely overwhelmed the local infrastructure.

The sudden influx of people created one of the largest traffic jams in American history. Thousands of fans abandoned their cars on state highways because the roads were totally blocked. They walked the remaining miles on foot to ensure they did not miss the start of the music. The crowds far exceeded the capacity of the small town of Watkins Glen. People set up makeshift campsites in the fields surrounding the raceway and slept in the open air. The sheer volume of fans turned the event into a free festival for the majority of the attendees.

Three major groups performed during the long day of music. The Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band, and The Band took the stage for extended sets. The music lasted for many hours as the sun beat down on the vast sea of people. Despite the talent on stage, the scale of the audience defined the historical significance of the event. The crowd was four times larger than the official ticket limit.

The festival featured a mix of life-changing events and tragic accidents. Records show that one child was born during the gathering at the raceway. Local authorities made fifty arrests during the weekend for various offenses. On the surrounding roads, four people died in traffic-related incidents. By the time the final notes played and the fans dispersed, the site was covered in debris. Rick Danko of The Band later categorized Watkins Glen as one of the three most important festivals in his group’s history.
