Frida Kahlo Paintings: 50+ Powerful Artworks By Legend Artist That Depict Her Life Situations

Frida Kahlo is one of the greatest Mexican artists, renowned for her self-portraits, colorful canvases and indigenous culture. Life experiences such as sorrows and passion are a common theme in Kahlo’s artwork. She perfectly depicted her life situation, relationship, pain, and whatever passes through her mind on the canvases. Frida’s artworks are deeply personal and mostly revolve around two major events in her life: nearly fatal accident she survived as teenager and divorce from fellow artist Diego Rivera.

Throughout her career, Kahlo painted 55 portrayals of herself, and over one hundred other sketches and drawings. Her earliest paintings from 1920s show influence from Renaissance masters and European avant-garde artists such as Amedeo Modigliani, while at the end, Frida derived more inspiration from Mexican folk art. Kahlo’s first solo exhibition took place at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York in 1938. Throughout the 1940s, Kahlo participated in exhibitions in Mexico and the United States, and also worked as an art teacher.
