Vintage Collages: This Artist Create Creative Collages From Old Photographs

Angie Naron is an American artist and photographer with a very specific obsession: old photographs. She hunts through vintage magazines and newspapers, cuts out the images she finds, and assembles them into entirely new scenes. The result is a body of work that feels both familiar and completely strange — figures from decades past placed into situations they never could have imagined.

A collage is made by combining photos, clippings, or small objects onto a single surface. Naron works entirely by hand. She uses no digital photo editing software — no Photoshop, no filters, no computer tools of any kind. Every element is physically cut and placed. That restriction makes her finished pieces even more impressive, because the combinations feel seamless despite being assembled the old-fashioned way.

He's as blind as he can be, just sees what he wants to see, Nowhere Man can you see me at all?"

If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"

What makes Naron’s collages stand out is the humor and surrealism packed into each frame. She places people into impossible situations — meeting giant animals, floating in strange landscapes, or interacting with objects completely out of scale. The scenes are absurd, but because all the source material is genuinely vintage, there’s a deadpan quality to them. The people in the photos look completely serious, which makes the chaos around them even funnier.

Her titles are half the joke. A piece called “Baby Simon and his sister Simone hold the world’s largest doughnut with sprinkles” tells you exactly what you’re about to see — and it still manages to surprise. Naron gives her subjects names, backstories, and inner lives, turning what could be simple cut-and-paste art into something that reads more like illustrated fiction.

The raw materials Naron works with carry the visual style of their era. Portraits from mid-century magazines have a particular look — stiff poses, formal clothing, perfectly lit faces. By pulling those images out of their original context and dropping them into new ones, Naron highlights just how odd everyday life can look when you strip away the familiar setting.

Some of her pieces lean into dream logic. “Vivienne’s passion for roses invaded her dreams at night” and “Dream a little dream of me” feel softer and more poetic than her more comedic work. Naron shifts registers easily — one collage is laugh-out-loud funny, the next is quietly strange, the one after that is genuinely beautiful.

Scale is one of Naron’s favorite tools. Giant squid, enormous doughnuts, oversized ducks — she loves making something enormous appear right next to an ordinary person who seems barely fazed by it. The effect is both funny and slightly unsettling, the way a dream can be.

Her longer titles function almost like short stories. “Moments before Delores realized her boogie board had been grabbed by a giant squid she imagined what shipwrecked sailors thought as they were about to enter Davy Jones’ locker” — that’s a full narrative arc delivered in a single caption. The image does its part, but the title seals it.
