Raquel Welch was born Jo Raquel Tejada on September 5, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois. Her father was Bolivian and her mother was American, and that mix gave her a striking look that set her apart from a very young age. When her family relocated to Southern California, she threw herself into performance — joining drama clubs at school and entering beauty pageants. In 1958, she won the title of Miss Fairest of the Fair, an early sign of what was coming.
Breaking into Hollywood was not easy, and Welch spent years picking up small television roles before catching a real break. Her first major film was the 1966 science fiction movie Fantastic Voyage, where she played a scientist on a mission inside the human body. The role got her noticed, but it was her second big film that same year that changed everything.
That film was One Million Years B.C. Welch played a cavewoman named Loana, wearing a fur bikini that became one of the most recognized images in Hollywood history. The promotional poster sold millions of copies worldwide. Almost overnight, her name became linked to the idea of the ultimate screen sex symbol.
Welch was determined not to let that one image define her entire career. She actively sought out varied roles and worked alongside major stars including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Mae West. Films like Bedazzled (1967), Bandolero! (1968), and 100 Rifles (1969) showed she could hold her own across different genres, from comedy to westerns.
Her personal style was just as bold as her film choices. She wore figure-hugging gowns and daring outfits at a time when Hollywood women were expected to play it safe. Her big, voluminous hair and smokey eye makeup became trends that fans copied across the country. She was a style force, not just a movie star.
Welch kept working well beyond the years when most stars of her era had faded from view. She released fitness videos, launched a successful wig line, and continued taking on film and television projects into her later decades. Her career stretched across more than five decades in total.
Raquel Welch passed away on February 15, 2023, at her home in Los Angeles. She was 82 years old. Her death certificate listed cardiac arrest as the cause, and she had also been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. She is survived by her two children, Tahnee and Damon, and four grandchildren.
