Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III’s Wedding in 1956: The Ceremony and Celebration in Monaco That Captured the World

When Grace Kelly announced her engagement to Prince Rainier III of Monaco in January 1956, the world took notice. The Philadelphia-born actress was one of Hollywood’s biggest stars — poised, elegant, and widely admired. Rainier was the sovereign ruler of Monaco, a tiny principality perched on the French Riviera. Their union fused the glamour of American cinema with centuries of European royal tradition.

The couple made their first public appearances together in New York, drawing crowds and camera flashes wherever they went. Kelly visited jewelers to select gifts for her groom, posed for photographers on Fifth Avenue, and spent her final weeks in America packing, planning, and saying goodbye to the life she was leaving behind.

Back in Hollywood, MGM costume designer Helen Rose and a team of seamstresses were hard at work constructing Kelly’s wedding gown — a gift from the studio. The dress was made from silk taffeta and antique lace, featuring a high neckline, long sleeves, a fitted bodice, and a sweeping train. Every detail was carefully crafted over weeks. A pearl-studded prayer book was also prepared to accompany her down the aisle.

On April 4, 1956, Kelly departed New York aboard the ocean liner SS Constitution, bringing her bridesmaids, family, her dog Oliver, and roughly 80 pieces of luggage. Reporters tracked every mile of the voyage. When the ship arrived in Monaco’s harbor, Prince Rainier was there to meet her, and thousands of people lined the waterfront to catch a glimpse of the American bride.

In the days that followed, Monaco buzzed with activity. Journalists, dignitaries, and well-wishers filled the principality’s streets as final preparations came together.

The wedding required two separate ceremonies. The first, a civil ceremony legally required under Monegasque law, took place on April 18 inside the Palace’s Throne Room. A judge officiated before close family and senior officials. The following day, April 19, the grand religious ceremony was held at Saint Nicholas Cathedral, attended by European royals, heads of state, ambassadors, and Hollywood figures alike.

Inside the Cathedral, the service included religious readings, blessings, and the exchange of vows and rings. The Bishop of Monaco administered the nuptial benediction. Prince Rainier wore his formal military uniform as head of state, standing in sharp contrast to — and perfect complement with — Kelly’s intricate gown. Radio stations broadcast updates worldwide, and television carried portions of the ceremony to audiences across the globe.

When the newlyweds emerged, enormous crowds greeted them. Processions through Monaco’s streets gave the public a direct view of the new Princess. That night, fireworks lit up the sky above the harbor as the Prince’s Palace hosted lavish banquets and receptions for hundreds of distinguished guests.
