When Grace Kelly announced her engagement to Prince Rainier III of Monaco in January 1956, the world took notice. The Philadelphia-born actress was one of Hollywood’s biggest stars — poised, elegant, and widely admired. Rainier was the sovereign ruler of Monaco, a tiny principality perched on the French Riviera.
