The corporation was founded in 1916 as a manufacturer of aircraft engines, produced in 1917 through 1918, and then again between 1933 and 1945.

Automobiles are marketed under the BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce brands. Motorcycles are marketed under the BMW Motorrad brand.
