Taken by a drone?
From the large hill across the street.
There was a mansion on top of that hill on the west side of Yonge across from the Miller – called Grey Gables and owned by the Tudhope Family. Some time before that the property was owned by the Andrew McGlashan pioneer family that owned a lot of property in the Hollow.
Do you have any more old pictures of Hogg’s Hollow around 1960? I’m particularly interested in the skating rink they used to have in the parking lot of the Jolly Miller.
That was a great place to skate wasn’t it Valerie. Such good times and memories.
I used to walk there from my home on Ridley Blvd when I was a little runt of a girl and skated to music. I longed for a skating outfit like Barbara Ann Scott but my mom.made me a cute pleated short skirt and hand knit a sweater to match so.all.good…and she had 4 more kids to dress as well. Our moms were rock stars!
That looks like, what will be, the Jolly Miller facing in the bottom right.
I was just thinking that
a great watering hole and many hours of ice skating out back as well. My late wife’s Grandfather had his own special table there, Captain William Henry Marsden. If he came in and his table was occupied the staff would move the guests so he could drink at his table.
back in those days the waiters would have to move the drinks. Patrons were not allowed to carry drinks between tables.
Cool story of the Captain’s Table.
I remember when I was a kid I would go to the beer store with my dad and he would have to fill out a form with name, and address etc. before he could get his beer. But the fun part was driving home in the front seat sitting on top of a case of beer. Ah sweet memories!
Hello, does anyone have a photo of the Church across from Miller Tavern? It was torn down a long time ago. there were steps from the bottom of Yonge street going up the hill. Right across the road from Tavern. (Or name of Church would be helpful too)
the church would now be the site that is one of three condos built
There is a historical marker about the church and the cemetary at the Miller crosswalk on the west side of Yonge. The condo there is York Mills Place 3900 Yonge.
There was a mansion on top of the hill called Grey Gables owned by the Tudhopes. Sometime before that, the property and a lot of lands in the Hollow were owned by pioneer Andrew McGlashan.
we live at 3900 Yonge. The Tudhope’s sold the property to Belmont Construction Company in the early 1970s – for $750 000. Imagine that! The sale included about 6 acres – the top piece where the mansion was and the hill down to Yonge Street where YMP is now. We rented the coach house on the property when we were first married. Later, we rented the mansion. One of those white fireplaces was in our bedroom! The mansion and coach house came down for redevelopment in the early 1980s; and a lot of the top piece of land was cut off to accommodate York Mills Place. So, in 50 years, we’ve come back to this property. Full circle!
I live in hoggs hallow. The house in the far background is still standing. The larger building In The foreground is the miller tavern
There also used to be a large swimming pool in the lot next to the tavern. I used to watch mostly guys diving from a rather big height off the diving board. I watched from the path.I lived southbound at top.of the hill near ‘the loop’ as we called it. Glen Echo.
