Mobile has lost a lot of architectural gems, but this might be the most painful one
In my opinion, the worst was tearing down the beautiful post office for the brutalist federal building the Corps of Engineers is occupying for a while longer.
To be fair, the building didn’t look that way for very long. A hurricane in 1906 caused much of what you see on the roof to be lost. All the little statues and towers were blown away along with the original clock. After the storms of 1906 and 1916, it looked very different.
Here’s another gem that was demolished in that general area.
New one is way better..
Yeah this one doesn’t even have any color
It’s now home to the Mobile History Museum.
This was actually torn down. As well as being a museum, the history museum was also a market and a city hall.
Thanks for providing the correct information, my apologies! It was an old government building.
It’s no problem! The fact that it was torn down is a shame because it was a beautiful building.
What cross streets was this located? Why was this masterpiece destroyed?
On the corner of Government and Royal, there was an old courthouse and jail. There is now a Mardi Gras Park there. This photo shows a view that looks mainly south and west. In the 1950s, it was demolished and replaced with the new old courthouse. Its ornate decor was scrubbed off by hurricanes in 1906 and 1916, and it was old and not as functional as it should have been. For the same reasons the old courthouse from the 1950s was demolished and replaced with the landlocked clipper ship we have today.
