LIFE magazine photographer Loomis Dean brought the California shore to the world in vivid detail during the 1950s. His photos captured not just sunbathers and surf, but a fully developed fashion culture built around structure, practicality, and flair.
The plain black bathing suit was the defining piece of the era. These suits were built with boning and stiff interfacing to shape the body into a sharp hourglass silhouette. The fabric of choice was Lastex — a rubber-based satin that gripped the figure like a corset and gave a smooth, matte finish that popped against the bright California sun.
Hair protection was a serious concern. Women in the 1950s wore elaborate curls and permanent waves, so letting saltwater near their hair was not an option. Heavy-duty rubber bathing caps kept every strand dry. These weren’t plain or dull — manufacturers molded them into textures resembling bubble crepe or covered them with three-dimensional rubber petals.
Many caps included a chin strap to hold firm in rough Pacific surf. Once out of the water, the rubber cap came off and a wide-brimmed straw hat took over. Drawn from styles in Hawaii and the Virgin Islands, these oversized hats acted as personal sunshades and gave beach outfits a theatrical edge.
The rough texture of natural straw visually balanced the sleek, smooth Lastex suits perfectly. California designers also turned to everyday toweling fabric for cover-ups. One standout was the salmon pink toga — terry cloth draped around the body in a style that was both striking and functional. It dried the wearer while looking deliberately styled.
The classic T-shirt made its own mark on the beach scene during this decade. Once considered an undergarment, it crossed over into accepted casual wear for the boardwalk and beyond.
European trends also shaped California beach style. “Pirate pants,” borrowed from French Riviera fashion, were cropped trousers that ended mid-calf. They paired easily with swimsuits or T-shirts and allowed easy movement on the sand, making them a practical and chic choice for a full day at the ocean.
