Susan Abraham: Fabulous Photos of a legendary Model of the 1950s

Susan Abraham was one of the most recognizable faces in British fashion during the 1950s. Born in 1930 in Burma, she spent her early years between Dublin and Connecticut before eventually making her way to London. Her Irish-American background gave her a look that many compared to Grace Kelly — classic, poised, and effortlessly glamorous.

When Susan arrived in London to pursue modeling, she shared a flat with fellow aspiring model Myrtle Crawford. It didn’t take long for her to find her footing. She began appearing in prestigious publications like Vogue and the short-lived UK Vanity Fair, quickly becoming a sought-after name in the industry.

What set Susan apart from other models of her era was her energy in front of the camera. While many models of the time projected a cool, detached expression, Susan was warm and lively. She was often caught giggling or flashing a broad smile, and photographers loved her for it.

Photographers John Deakin, Don Honeyman, and Henry Clarke were among those particularly drawn to her natural spontaneity. She wasn’t performing for the lens — she was genuinely enjoying herself, and that came through in every shot.

Her range as a model was impressive. From structured tweed suits to flowing evening gowns, Susan wore each piece with confidence and ease. The early 1950s photographs below show her versatility across day and eveningwear alike.

By 1952, Susan was a well-established fixture in London’s fashion circles. Her fame, however, remained largely within the UK. She was celebrated in British fashion, but her profile never expanded significantly beyond the country’s borders — something that was common for models of that period whose careers were shaped by local print media.

The year 1953 was one of her most prolific. Susan appeared in a wide variety of editorial looks that year, from casual daywear to dramatic ball gowns, demonstrating the full breadth of what high British fashion looked like at mid-century.

Into 1954, Susan continued working, adding refined and polished looks to her editorial portfolio. Her ability to inhabit both understated daywear and dramatic statement pieces made her a reliable choice for the era’s top fashion photographers.

In January 1955, Susan married a young man whose father, like her own, was the head of a major British oil company. The wedding took place in Knightsbridge, and with it, her professional modeling career came to a close. She did, on occasion, continue to pose for photographer John French, but these were personal rather than commercial appearances. Susan passed away in 2020 in the UK at the age of 90. The photographs below, taken after her marriage, show she lost none of her natural elegance.
