On 12th July 1966, fifteen young women pulled off one of the more unlikely world records of the decade. Outside University Motors on Conduit Street in London, they squeezed every last one of themselves into a single BMC Mini — and in doing so, broke the world record for the most passengers ever crammed into the tiny car.
The BMC Mini was already a cultural icon by 1966. Launched in 1959, it had been designed to pack as much usable space as possible into the smallest body on the road. But even its designers almost certainly never pictured fifteen passengers fitting inside one. The car’s interior measured just enough for four adults in reasonable comfort — making this attempt all the more remarkable.
The record they were chasing had originally been set by American college students. Cramming people into small spaces — phone booths, Volkswagen Beetles, Mini cars — was a popular stunt on American campuses during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The craze eventually crossed the Atlantic, and by the mid-1960s, British challengers were eager to claim the title for themselves.
All fifteen women wore miniskirts — the defining fashion of the era. The miniskirt had only been popularized a year or two earlier, largely through the work of London designer Mary Quant, whose boutique on the King’s Road helped make it a symbol of the Swinging Sixties. Conduit Street, where University Motors was located, sat at the heart of fashionable London, making it a fitting backdrop for the attempt.
Getting fifteen people into a Mini required far more coordination than it sounds. Each person had to fold themselves into a specific position so that the next could follow. Arms, legs, and bodies had to be arranged with precision. The doors still had to close — that was part of the record. A car full of people with the doors hanging open did not count.
University Motors was not a random location. It was one of the most well-known BMC and Austin dealerships in London at the time, operating out of Conduit Street in Mayfair. Staging the record attempt outside the dealership gave the event a clear sponsor tie-in and put the Mini’s brand squarely at the center of the story.
The sequence of photographs taken that day captures the attempt in stages. Early images show the women gathered around the car, and later frames show the pile of bodies filling every inch of the Mini’s cabin. The expressions range from determined concentration to barely suppressed laughter.
When the final count was confirmed at fifteen, the group had surpassed the American record and set a new world mark. The attempt was photographed and widely reported, placing the image firmly in the visual archive of 1960s Britain — a snapshot of youth, humor, and the particular energy of London in that period.
The Mini itself was just over ten feet long and weighed less than 1,300 pounds. That fifteen people fit inside one — however briefly, however uncomfortably — remains one of the more striking demonstrations of just how much the little car could be pushed beyond its intended purpose.
