Stunning Color Photos of Barcelona Tramways in the 1960s

Historically, Barcelona had an extensive tramway network. The city’s first tram line was opened in 1872, but most of these lines had closed by 1971, replaced by buses and the Barcelona Metro system.

Several companies built lines, but by the 1900s, the two leading companies were Barcelona Tramways and Compañía General de Tranvías. Route numbers were introduced in 1910 after the railroad became electrified in the 1900s. In 1925, the two prominent companies merged into Tranvías de Barcelona (TB). The Spanish Civil War (1936-9) severely damaged the tramways.

Some historical photos show tramways in Barcelona during their last years in the 1960s.
