Connery made his film debut with a small role in “Lilacs in the Spring” in 1954. The part was minor, but it was a start. “Goldfinger” in 1964 sealed the deal. The film became a global phenomenon, turning James Bond into a cultural institution and Connery into one of the most famous men on earth. Audiences worldwide lined up to watch him, and studios recognized they had something extraordinary on their hands.
Away from the Bond set, Connery’s personal life was equally eventful. In 1962 — the same year “Dr. No” released — he married Scottish actress Diane Cilento. The two had a son together, Jason Connery, who later became an actor himself. The marriage ended in divorce in 1973. Connery went on to date several women in the public eye, including Jill St. John, Lana Wood, Magda Konopka, Carole Mallory, and Lynsey de Paul. In 1975, he married French-Moroccan painter Micheline Roquebrune, and the two remained together for the rest of his life.
Connery played Bond across six official films — “Dr. No,” “From Russia with Love,” “Goldfinger,” “Thunderball,” “You Only Live Twice,” and “Diamonds Are Forever” — before stepping away from the role. He later returned in the unofficial Bond film “Never Say Never Again” in 1983, once more proving his magnetic hold on the character.
Outside the Bond franchise, Connery worked hard to prove his range. He took on diverse roles across genres — thrillers, historical dramas, action films, and literary adaptations. He refused to be boxed in, and his choices reflected a desire to be taken seriously as an actor, not just a movie star.
That effort paid off in 1987 when Connery won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as veteran cop Jim Malone in “The Untouchables,” directed by Brian De Palma. It was one of the most celebrated wins of that era’s ceremony. Connery played opposite Kevin Costner and brought a warmth, toughness, and humor to the role that critics and audiences loved.
His appeal never faded with age — it somehow deepened. In 1989, People magazine named him “Sexiest Man Alive.” He was 59 years old. Then in 1999, at age 69, he was voted “Sexiest Man of the Century” by the same publication. Both titles underscored something that people who watched him always knew: Connery’s screen presence had nothing to do with youth.

Sean Connery celebrated his 90th birthday in August 2020. His family announced his death on October 31, 2020. He died at his home in the Bahamas. The world mourned the loss of a man who had spent nearly seven decades in the public eye — first as a model, then a TV actor, then a global film icon.
