The Fashionable Ladies of the 60s: Captured in Photographs with their Cars

The 1960s was a decade that rewrote the rules — in politics, culture, and especially fashion. Women across Europe and America were stepping out in bold new styles, from tailored coats and beehive hairdos to sleeveless floral dresses and miniskirts. And more and more, they were doing it beside — or behind the wheel of — some of the most striking cars of the era. The collection spans from 1960 to the late 1960s and covers an impressive range of locations — suburban streets in West Germany, cobblestone old-town squares, Alpine mountain roads, the grounds of the Palace of Versailles, and the Out Islands of the Bahamas. The cars are just as varied. Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Chevrolet, Jaguar, Citroën, Ford, Volkswagen — these machines were not just transportation. They were status symbols, style statements, and in many cases, the proud centerpiece of a snapshot meant to be kept for life.

Among the earliest photos in the collection, a young woman poses on a Porsche 356 B Coupé beside a lake under autumn sun, her New York State plates marking the year as 1960. That same year, another woman stands cheerfully in front of a classical building with a 1959 Chevrolet Impala Sport Coupe — a car that was already turning heads on American streets.

Europe features heavily throughout the collection. In April 1960, a dark-haired woman in a patterned dress sits on the bonnet of a Ford Taunus 17M De Luxe with the Palace of Versailles rising behind her. It’s a remarkable pairing of mid-century German engineering and French royal grandeur.

By 1962, the photographs grow richer in variety. A woman in Wuppertal, West Germany, poses with a Volkswagen VW 1200 in front of what appears to be a hotel. On a snowy winter’s day, a young woman sits on the fender of an Opel Rekord P2, unbothered by the cold. And in Stuttgart, a platinum-blonde woman wearing a sleeveless floral dress and black velvet opera gloves stands beside a Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Cabriolet in front of a medieval cathedral — one of the most formally dressed subjects in the entire collection.

Not all settings were grand. A stylish woman in a dark coat, hat, and boots poses with a Simca Aronde on a quiet country road in France, her car registered in the département of Nièvre. Three women gather around a DKW Junior in a residential street in Springe, West Germany. An elegant woman in Geneva leans against a compact Fiat 600 in a gravel lot surrounded by countryside. These were everyday moments — but the care taken in clothing and presentation made each one feel deliberate.

The mid-decade years brought more personality to the frames. In 1963, a brunette woman in a purple and white dress stands with a Ford Taunus 17M fitted with amber fog lights and bullet-style wing mirrors. Another woman grins from behind the wheel of a VW 1200 Cabriolet in the countryside, her car equipped with fender guides and an extra wing mirror. By 1964 and 1965, the photos take on an even wider geographic range. A young blonde, identified on the back of her print as “Nancy 1964,” perches on the bonnet of a 1960 Chevrolet Impala in the driveway of a private home. Meanwhile in Los Angeles, a woman named Hannelore grins beside a maroon Volvo P1800 in a parking lot, the handwritten inscription on the back of the photo placing her there in 1966.

The Citroën 2CV appears twice in 1965. In one photo, a brunette woman in a white summer dress relaxes in the car’s distinctive hammock-style seats. In another, a different woman perches on the fender of a 2CV registered in the French département of Rhône, smiling on a suburban street. The little Citroën — lightweight, affordable, and enormously popular in France — makes for a charming contrast to the heavier American and German machines elsewhere in the collection.

The latter half of the decade produced some of the most iconic shots. A blonde woman in a red suit stands beside a brand-new 1966 Ford Mustang at a Ford dealership. A brunette in a red coat poses with an Audi F103 in Hamburg in 1967. And in 1968, a woman stands before a Jaguar E-Type on a country road in summertime — one of the most desirable sports cars of its era — dressed as sharply as the car itself.

The undated photos — filed simply as “1960s” — round out the collection with their own charm. A blonde woman strikes a seductive pose with an Auto Union 1000 Sp. A cheerful brunette and her dog stand beside a slightly worn Goggomobil T 250 on a cobblestone street. A woman in a polka dot dress grins in a city square next to a Citroën. A beehive-coiffed woman in a white skirt and cardigan poses with a Belgian-plated Peugeot 403. And two women stand together at a railway station in Italy, their two-tone Ford Taunus 12M registered far away in the West German district of Itzehoe — a reminder of just how far people drove, and how much care they took to mark the moment with a photograph.
