The Street Life of West London in 1982 Through the Lens of Sunil Gupta

In 1982, Sunil Gupta was a student at the Royal College of Art in London, working toward a degree he would complete the following year. Between his studies, he took to the streets of West London with a camera, documenting the people and places he found there. The result was a body of work that captured a very specific slice of London life — unposed, unfiltered, and rooted in a particular moment in time.

Gupta focused on three distinct areas: Sloane Square, King’s Road, and Earl’s Court. Each had its own character. Sloane Square sat at the heart of Chelsea, drawing a well-dressed crowd that mixed old money with fashionable youth. King’s Road, just steps away, had been a center of British street fashion since the 1960s and still carried that energy into the early 1980s.

Earl’s Court, by contrast, had a transitory feel. It was a neighborhood of bedsits and short-term rentals, populated by travelers, immigrants, and young people passing through the city. Gupta’s lens caught all of this — the permanence of some and the restlessness of others — within the same few square miles.

His street photographs are direct and observational. He didn’t stage scenes or ask subjects to perform. People walk, stand, talk, and go about their day. The clothing, the storefronts, the light — everything grounds the images firmly in 1982.

Gupta later gathered this work into a book titled London ’82. The collection stands as a documentary record of West London at a specific point — a city where distinct social worlds existed in close proximity, all visible from the same pavement.
