Capturing Hollywood’s Golden Moments: Leo Fuchs’ Iconic Celebrity Photos from the ’50s and ’60s

Leo Fuchs spent more than 40 years behind the camera, building one of the most remarkable bodies of work in Hollywood history. He wasn’t a studio portrait photographer shooting actors under controlled lights. He was a “special photographer” — one of a small number of outsiders given direct access to active film sets across Europe and North America. Starting out as a freelance magazine photographer, Fuchs earned a reputation quickly. His ability to connect with the people he photographed set him apart from the start.

Fuchs didn’t just show up on set and point his camera. He built real relationships with the actors and directors he worked alongside. That trust gave him access that most photographers never had — candid moments during filming breaks, after-hours socializing, and quiet in-between scenes that revealed the human side of Hollywood’s biggest names. One of the stars he photographed most extensively was Audrey Hepburn, whom he followed to the Belgian Congo in 1958 for the filming of “The Nun’s Story.”

Filming in the Congo was physically demanding. The heat, the remote locations along the river, and the jungle terrain made it a difficult shoot. Fuchs captured Hepburn navigating all of it — wearing a straw pith helmet on set, sitting on a log writing letters, walking through the forest, and laughing while feeding a monkey on her lap in Kisangani. These weren’t posed publicity shots. They were real moments from a challenging production.

That same year, Fuchs was in Madrid photographing another major production: “Solomon and Sheba,” starring Gina Lollobrigida. Lollobrigida was one of the biggest European film stars of the era, and Fuchs photographed her extensively — both in full costume as the Queen of Sheba and in relaxed moments away from the cameras. He also photographed Brigitte Bardot in 1958, producing portraits that remain among the most striking images of her career.

Fuchs was also present in France in 1957 when Marlon Brando filmed scenes for “The Young Lions” at the Natzweiler-Struthof Concentration Camp. He photographed Brando behind barbed wire on the former camp grounds, and also captured Montgomery Clift on location at the same site. These images exist in a different register from the glamour shots — they document serious, heavy material being filmed at an actual site of atrocity.

By 1960, Fuchs was in Portofino and Rome for “Come September,” a romantic comedy pairing Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida. He photographed the two leads in dance sequences, in intimate on-screen moments, and during the elaborate bridal scenes that were central to the film. His images from this production are among the most visually rich of his career, shot against the backdrop of the Italian coast and Roman streets.

Fuchs’ range across the early 1960s was remarkable. He photographed Shirley MacLaine rehearsing and performing scenes for Billy Wilder’s “Irma la Douce” in Hollywood in 1962. That same year he was shooting portraits of Gregory Peck and Angie Dickinson in Los Angeles, capturing Joanne Woodward in Paris during “Paris Blues,” and following Doris Day and Cary Grant into the pool during “A Touch of Mink.”

Suzy Parker was another subject Fuchs photographed at length. In 1961, he shot an extensive promotional series for “The Interns” in Los Angeles, with Parker posing in multiple characters — glamorous diva, femme fatale, vamp, collegiate. The variety in a single shoot showed Fuchs’ instinct for storytelling through a series of images rather than a single frame.

Fuchs had a close friendship with Cary Grant, and it was Grant who eventually encouraged him to shift careers. In 1964, Fuchs put down his camera and began a 20-year career as a motion picture producer. Before that transition, however, he had already compiled a body of photographic work spanning two decades, dozens of productions, and locations from the Congo to Greece to Suriname to Madrid.

His earlier work is equally impressive. Fuchs was in Lisbon, Portugal in 1954 and 1955, shooting Yvonne Furneaux, Maureen O’Hara on the beach, and Ray Milland near the camera on the set of “Lisbon.” He was in Rome photographing a young Roseanna Schiaffino in 1955, and had already captured Deborah Kerr outside her Los Angeles home in 1956. The breadth of his geographic reach — across multiple continents over multiple decades — was extraordinary for a single photographer.
