Bror Meyer was one of Sweden’s finest figure skaters in the early twentieth century. He won the Swedish national title in 1906, the same year he placed fourth at the European Championships in Davos and took the bronze medal at the World Championships in Munich. Those results alone marked him as one of the top skaters in the world. He later competed at the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France, one of the first Winter Games ever held.
Meyer didn’t just skate at the highest level — he also coached. Several of his students went on to win national and international competitions. That combination of personal achievement and teaching experience made him uniquely qualified to write a guidebook for everyday skaters.
In 1921, Meyer published an illustrated guide to ice skating. The book was designed to share the techniques and knowledge he had gathered over decades on the ice. It covered everything from basic posture and balance to more advanced footwork and movement patterns.
The illustrations were a key part of the book. Rather than relying on words alone, Meyer used drawings to show exact body positions, edge placements, and movement sequences. For a reader learning at home without a coach, those visuals made the instructions far easier to follow.

The 1924 Chamonix Olympics, where Meyer competed, was a landmark event. It was held just three years after the guidebook was published, and it brought winter sports to a global audience for the first time under the Olympic banner.
Meyer’s guide appeared at a moment when public interest in skating was growing rapidly. More rinks were being built, skating clubs were expanding, and printed instructional material was in demand. His book met that need with authority and detail.
Each illustrated plate in the book served a specific instructional purpose. Some showed the skater from the front, others from the side or behind, so that readers could understand how a move looked from multiple angles.
The footwork sections were especially detailed. Meyer broke down how weight shifts between feet, how the knee bends during a push, and how the free leg should be held during a glide. These were the mechanics that separated a smooth skater from a clumsy one.
