Exploring the Cultural Heritage of Caucasia and Transcaucasia Through 19th-Century Photos

The Caucasus region sits at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. The Caucasus Mountains split it into two zones: the North Caucasus, between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, and the South Caucasus — also called Transcaucasia — which covers present-day Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. The rugged terrain kept many communities isolated for centuries, and that isolation preserved dozens of distinct languages, customs, and religious traditions.

Ethnic diversity defines the region more than almost anything else. Georgians, Armenians, and Azerbaijanis dominate Transcaucasia, while the North Caucasus is home to the Chechens, Ossetians, and Circassians, among many others. Christianity, Islam, and older indigenous faiths coexisted here across centuries, sometimes peacefully and sometimes not.

In the early 19th century, the Russian Empire pushed southward into the Caucasus to secure its borders and expand its territory. Local resistance was fierce, especially in the North Caucasus. Imam Shamil became the most prominent leader of that resistance, organizing long military campaigns against Russian forces.

The Caucasian War ran from 1817 to 1864. It was a prolonged, brutal conflict that ended with Russia in control of most of the region. In Transcaucasia, Russia secured territory through treaties rather than war alone. The Treaty of Gulistan in 1813 and the Treaty of Turkmenchay in 1828 forced Persia to hand over what is now Azerbaijan, Armenia, and parts of Georgia.

Russian expansion reshaped daily life across the Caucasus. Officials and settlers moved in, and new roads and railways connected the region to the wider empire. Russian law replaced traditional land and governance systems, creating sharp tension between local populations and the new administration.

Despite the pressure to assimilate, ethnic groups across the Caucasus held onto their languages, religious practices, and cultural customs. The Russian government responded to continued resistance — particularly in the North Caucasus — with harsh military action well into the late 19th century.

The most devastating outcome of Russian conquest was the mass expulsion of North Caucasian peoples. After the Caucasian War ended, tens of thousands of Circassians, Abkhazians, and others were forced out of their homeland or fled to the Ottoman Empire. Many died during the journey or were killed by Russian forces. This event is widely referred to as the Circassian Genocide.
