Daisy and Violet Hilton were born on February 5, 1908, in Brighton, England. They were conjoined twins, joined at the hip and buttocks. From the very first day of their lives, the odds were stacked against them. Medical knowledge at the time offered no reliable way to separate twins joined as they were, and survival after any attempted surgery was unlikely. Their biological mother, unwilling or unable to care for them, abandoned them shortly after birth.
The woman who took them in was Mary Hilton, the midwife who had been present at their birth. Mary was not a blood relative, but she gave the girls her last name and raised them as her own — though her motivations were not entirely selfless. She saw in the twins a financial opportunity and began exhibiting them publicly at a very young age, charging people to see them. This was not uncommon in the early 1900s, when so-called “freak shows” were a regular part of traveling fairs and exhibitions.
As the girls grew older, they proved to be more than a curiosity. They were genuinely talented. Daisy played the saxophone and Violet the violin. Both could sing, dance, and perform with real skill. By the time they were teenagers, they were performing on the vaudeville circuit — a network of live variety shows that were enormously popular across the United States in the early twentieth century.
Their act drew large crowds. Audiences were fascinated, not just by their physical connection, but by their genuine charm and performance ability. The 1920s and 1930s were the height of their fame. They toured extensively, appeared on stage with some of the era’s biggest names, and became well-known figures in American entertainment.
Despite their fame, Daisy and Violet had little control over their own lives or earnings for many years. Mary Hilton and, later, Mary’s daughter and son-in-law managed the twins and kept tight control over their finances and daily routines. The twins were essentially owned as a business asset. It was not until they took legal action as adults that they were finally granted their freedom and access to their own money.
Free from their guardians, the twins continued performing. They also entered the public spotlight in a new way — through film. Their first major movie appearance was in the 1932 film Freaks, directed by Tod Browning. The film featured real performers with physical differences and is now considered a cult classic, though it was highly controversial at the time of its release.
Their personal lives drew just as much attention as their performances. Both twins dated and sought to marry. Violet’s application for a marriage license was rejected in several states before she was finally married in 1936. The marriages did not last, but the twins’ desire for normal romantic lives was genuine. They were not looking for publicity — they were looking for partnership.
In 1942, the sisters published their autobiography, The Lives and Loves of the Hilton Sisters. The book gave readers a direct account of their experiences — their childhood under Mary Hilton, their years on the vaudeville stage, their legal fight for independence, and their personal lives. It was one of the few opportunities they had to tell their own story in their own words.
By the late 1940s, vaudeville was dying out, replaced by movies, radio, and eventually television. The twins struggled to find steady work as the entertainment industry shifted around them. In 1951, they starred in a second film called Chained for Life. It was an exploitation film loosely based on their lives and dealt with themes of crime and the legal complications that might arise from a conjoined person being charged with a crime.
The film did not reverse their declining fortunes. The twins tried other ventures, including opening a hot dog stand, but the business failed. Work became harder to find. They took on bookings wherever they could, touring smaller venues across the country. The glamour of their peak years was gone, but they kept working.
The final chapter of their story began in Charlotte, North Carolina. They had traveled there for a booking, but their tour manager abandoned them, leaving them stranded with no way to move on. With no money and no transportation, they had no choice but to stay. A local grocery store owner offered them work, and they took it.
They spent the remaining years of their lives working at that grocery store in Charlotte. The women who had once performed before thousands of people now spent their days stocking shelves and helping customers. Neighbors and coworkers knew them and treated them with respect. They lived quietly, far removed from the spotlight they had known for decades.
On January 4, 1969, the twins were found dead in their home. They had not shown up for work, and when someone went to check on them, they were discovered inside. Medical examiners determined that both had died of influenza. Daisy died first. Because they were conjoined and shared circulation, Violet died several days after her sister. She could not survive once Daisy was gone.
