The Other Half: 50+ Cool Twin Photographs From 20th Century

Twins have always drawn attention. From the moment they arrive, they share a birthday, often a face, and a connection that starts before birth. But beyond the surface similarities, twins lead separate lives with their own personalities, interests, and stories. The photographs collected here span nearly a century — from the 1870s through the 1990s — and show twins in moments both ordinary and remarkable. Some images come from family settings. Others document famous figures, medical history, and one of the largest twin gatherings in the world.

The earliest photograph in this collection dates to 1870, showing Elizabeth Snowden alongside twins Eleanor and Grace. It is a formal portrait of the kind common in Victorian photography — stiff, carefully posed, and preserved as a record of family life.

By the early 1900s, twin photographs began appearing in more everyday settings. In 1909, two brothers worked side by side selling newspapers in Hartford, Connecticut. Child labor was common at the time, and these brothers were no different from thousands of other working children across American cities.

Transportation was changing fast in the early 20th century, and twins appeared at the center of it. One photograph from 1910 shows a pair getting ready to board an airplane — still a rare and exciting experience at the time. Another from 1914 captures twin girls preparing to ride in a car, dressed in the formal style of the era.

A photograph from 1920 shows twin boys perched on a small pedal car — a simple, joyful image that contrasts sharply with a far more serious photo from 1902. That image documents an operating room where surgeons attempted to separate conjoined twins, a procedure that was extremely dangerous given the medical technology of the time.

Among the most well-known conjoined twins of the 20th century were Daisy and Violet Hilton. Born in England in 1908, the sisters were joined at the hip and pelvis. They were sold by their mother and raised under exploitative management, but they became famous entertainers — performing in vaudeville and appearing in films, including the 1932 movie Freaks.

The 1920s brought a new cultural moment. The Flapper era reshaped fashion, music, and social freedom — especially for women. A striking portrait from this decade shows twin flappers in the style of the time, capturing the energy of a generation that rejected many traditional norms.

In 1937, a photograph documents something statistically rare: twin mothers who gave birth on the same day. Both women, already sharing a birthday themselves, delivered their babies simultaneously — a remarkable coincidence recorded for posterity.

One of the most extensively photographed twin stories from the mid-20th century belongs to Gloria and Consuelo O’Connor. In 1947, a photographer documented their daily lives in detail — capturing them at a fashion show, at a nightclub, helping at a hospital, learning ballet, washing each other’s hair, and praying before bed. The series gives a full picture of two young women living full, public lives while constantly being seen as a pair.

Not all famous twins of the 20th century were entertainers. Ronnie and Reggie Kray were identical twins who became the most notorious gangsters in London’s East End during the 1950s and 1960s. They ran a criminal empire that included clubs, protection rackets, and murder. Both were convicted in 1969 and spent the rest of their lives in prison.

A different kind of fame belonged to Alice and Ellen Kessler. The German-born twins built careers as dancers and entertainers across Europe. A 1958 photograph from Paris captures them at the height of their popularity, performing as the Dancing Kessler Twins.

A fun moment from the 1910s also survives in this collection — twin girls posing with a police officer in what appears to be a lighthearted street photograph.

The final large section of this collection comes from Twins Day, an annual festival held in Twinsburg, Ohio. Starting in the 1970s and growing significantly through the 1990s, the event became the largest annual gathering of twins in the world. Thousands of pairs attend each year, many dressed in matching outfits. The photographs from this festival span a huge range — young twins, elderly twins, identical and fraternal, in costumes and in casual clothes. Together they form a vivid portrait of just how many people share this experience.
