Barcelona thrived in the 1960s leaving behind the austerity endured in the 1950s. People enjoyed their evenings in the cheapest bars and restaurants. The city was beautiful with a maze of narrow streets to the wide straight boulevards in total contrast. The population also grew rapidly as a large influx of people from different parts of the country migrated to Barcelona. Spent a significant amount of time in Barcelona in 1965 and 1966 as an American GI on leave from my Infantry unit in Germany. Great memories of the nightlife and days spent at the beaches.
Stayed at the American Hotel which I’m sure no longer exists. Amazingly liberal practices back then considering Franco was still “the man.”
