Before streaming services and digital downloads, people bought music based on what they saw. The album cover was the first thing a shopper noticed on a record store shelf. A strong cover could sell thousands of copies. A bad one could stop a buyer in their tracks — just not in the way the artist intended.
Most artists put serious thought into their cover art. They hired photographers, stylists, and designers to make sure the packaging matched the music. But some artists went in a completely different direction — one that raised more questions than it answered.
The 1970s were a particularly bold era for album art. Clothing choices were loud, hairstyles were extreme, and facial hair reached new heights of ambition. Some artists leaned into that energy and created covers that, even by the loose standards of the time, looked genuinely strange.
Bad album covers come in many forms. Some feature awkward poses that no photographer should have approved. Others use color combinations that hurt to look at. A few rely on concepts so confusing that no amount of context makes them clearer.
Then there are the covers where the artist clearly tried to be creative — and the effort made things worse. A forced smile, an odd prop, or a background that clashes with everything else can turn a photo session into a disaster.
Font choices played a big role in some of these failures too. Blocky lettering slapped over a busy photo, or a cursive title that’s nearly impossible to read — these details added to the overall chaos of covers that were already struggling.
Not all of these covers come from unknown acts trying to break through on a tight budget. Some well-known artists produced covers that their own fans would rather forget. Fame and money were no guarantee of good visual judgment.
The range of bad is wide here. Some covers are funny. Some are puzzling. A few are so aggressively strange that they loop back around to being almost impressive — not for their quality, but for their commitment to a vision that nobody else shared.
Country, gospel, pop, rock — no genre was immune. Each style had its own version of the overly literal concept, the wardrobe malfunction, or the photo that should have stayed in the reject pile.
Gospel albums from the 1970s and 1980s produced some of the most unintentionally funny covers in music history. The combination of wholesome intent and questionable execution created a category all their own.
Children’s albums also made the list. Some featured illustrations that looked more frightening than fun. Others used photos of performers in costumes that no child would find comforting.
What all of these covers share is a gap between what the artist was going for and what actually ended up on the shelf. That gap — sometimes small, sometimes enormous — is what makes them so hard to look away from.
