50+ Stunning Then And Now Portraits Of Celebrities Posing With Themselves In The Pictures Of Past

Dutch digital artist Ard Gelinck has built a remarkable series by doing something deceptively simple — placing celebrities side by side with their younger selves. Using careful photo compositing, he merges an older image of a famous face with a current one, making it look as though the two versions of the same person are sharing the same space. The results are striking, sometimes funny, and occasionally emotional.

The series spans decades of pop culture, pulling from Hollywood golden-age icons all the way to today’s biggest names. Each finished image tells a story about time, recognition, and how much — or how little — a person changes. Some celebrities are barely recognizable from their early years. Others look almost exactly the same. From action stars to musicians to royalty, no one is off limits.

Sylvester Stallone, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Jim Carrey are among the icons featured — each photographed at a major point in their careers and then reunited with that earlier version of themselves. Seeing Stallone in his Rocky-era prime standing next to the man he is today is genuinely jaw-dropping.

Gelinck also captures stars who grew up in the public eye. Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe both entered fame as children on the Harry Potter set, and their then-and-now portraits show the full arc from child actor to adult star. Justin Bieber’s portrait carries that same sense of dramatic transformation — from teenage pop phenomenon to grown artist.

Johnny Depp, Julia Roberts, and George Clooney represent Hollywood’s biggest draws from the 1990s and 2000s. Their earlier photos capture them at the height of their early fame — young, sharp, and instantly recognizable. Placed next to where they stand today, the images feel like a direct conversation between two eras of the same career.

The series also reaches back to earlier generations of stardom. Brigitte Bardot, Sean Connery, and Robert Redford represent a time in entertainment that feels worlds away from today. Their portraits carry extra weight — these are figures whose younger images are already iconic on their own.

Some of the portraits carry a heavier emotional punch. Robin Williams, who died in 2014, appears alongside his younger, energetic self — a reminder of what was lost. These images of those no longer with us give the series a poignant edge that goes beyond nostalgia.

TV legends are well represented too. Patrick Dempsey, Ted Danson, Bryan Cranston, and Ellen DeGeneres all make appearances, each with a past photo drawn from a defining moment in their careers. Seeing Cranston’s earlier work set against the man who played Walter White puts his transformation as an actor in sharp perspective.

Gelinck doesn’t limit himself to actors and musicians. Barack Obama, Prince Harry, and Jodie Foster all feature in the collection, showing that the concept works across every kind of public life. Each portrait follows the same formula but lands differently depending on who the subject is and how much time separates the two photos.

What makes this series stand out from a simple side-by-side comparison is the technical craftsmanship. Gelinck matches lighting, scale, and body positioning so precisely that the two images feel like they belong together. The older and younger versions seem to genuinely inhabit the same photograph, not just sit next to each other.
