Te Ata Thompson Fisher was born on December 3, 1895, near Emet, Oklahoma. Her name means “Bearer of the Morning” — a fitting title for a woman who would spend her life bringing Native American stories into the spotlight. She was a proud citizen of the Chickasaw Nation, and from a young age, she showed a natural gift for performance.
Te Ata received her early education in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, before enrolling at the Oklahoma College for Women. It was there that her talent for drama became clear. She took to the stage with a presence that set her apart from the very beginning. Later, she spent a year studying at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, sharpening her craft even further.
Her career as a storyteller and actress spanned more than 60 years. In those early years, she used her storytelling work to fund her acting ambitions. Her performances were unlike anything audiences had seen before — she brought Chickasaw legends, myths, and chants to life while dressed in traditional native regalia.
After moving to New York City, Te Ata met and married Dr. Clyde Fisher, a naturalist and astronomer. New York became a base for her growing career. During the 1930s, she performed at summer camps throughout New York and New England, reaching audiences of all ages with her storytelling.
At the peak of her career, Te Ata performed across the United States and traveled internationally, taking the stage in England and Scandinavia. These were not small, intimate shows — she performed for some of the most powerful audiences in the world.
In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt invited Te Ata to perform at the White House for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain. It was one of the most high-profile performances of her life, and she delivered her Chickasaw stories before heads of state with the same depth and authenticity she brought to every stage.
Beyond performing, Te Ata worked as a drama instructor, passing her knowledge on to the next generation. But her greatest passion remained the artistic interpretation of Native American folklore. She co-authored a children’s book on the subject, making Indigenous stories accessible to young readers across the country.
The honors she received over her lifetime reflected the deep respect people had for her work. In 1957, she was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. In 1976, Ladies’ Home Journal named her Woman of the Year. Then in 1987, the state of Oklahoma named her its Official State Treasure — a rare and meaningful recognition.
Her connection to New York ran deep as well. A lake near Bear Mountain in New York was named in her honor, a permanent tribute to the woman who had captivated so many audiences in that state decades before.
Throughout her life, Te Ata never separated herself from her Chickasaw identity. It was the foundation of everything she did on stage. Her regalia, her chants, her legends — all of it was rooted in a culture she represented with pride and precision. She was not playing a character. She was sharing her people’s history.
Te Ata Thompson Fisher died on October 26, 1995, in Oklahoma City, just weeks before what would have been her 100th birthday. She had lived a century’s worth of art, travel, and storytelling — performing for presidents and kings, campers and schoolchildren alike.
