Nina Leen captured these spectacular and magnificent photos. She was a Russian-born photographer and painter. Nina was best known for the first women photographers for Life. Leen was also one of the most productive and masterly fashion photographers of LIFE. She bought her first camera while she was in Europe, later she migrated to the United States and then visited Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. Her photos graced over 50 Life magazine covers. She is also best known for her many pictures of animals, and especially she adopted a stray dog, Lucky. During her early years on the magazine, Nina Leen did several memorable stories about teenagers. As an expert observer of the manners and mores of her new country, her reactions to American youth were particularly acute.

Love this! I just finished making a dress with these sleeves – the vintage pattern I used called them “lantern sleeves.”

The print on that skirt is fabulous – lots of Early American details. I would have loved to see it in color!
